What are the Reiki principles? Does Reiki have rules? And more on Reiki Quotes and Principles!
Reiki isn’t a religion, it’s an energy and it doesn’t have commandments. But Reiki does offer its practitioners and benefactors “principles” to live by. Much like in Yoga teacher training where we are taught about Karma Yoga, these Reiki ‘rules’ are merely a guide for Reiki practitioners to follow if they choose.
Some Reiki practitioners prefer the modern ones, some the traditional – it’s entirely down to personal preference. The origin of the principles is debated some believe Dr. Usui – the founder of Usui Reiki to have been the founder of these principles and some attribute them to the Emperor of Japan – Emperor Meiji. What is known is that Dr Usui recited these principles daily to inspire his practise of Reiki.
Why ‘Just for today’, why not ‘always’?
One question new practitioners have about the Reiki principles is: Why do we promise ‘just for today’? Why not ‘always’? And for that I give an analogy, have you ever made a New Year’s Resolution that went something like ‘I am never going to eat chocolate ever again’ and failed after just a few weeks? Or perhaps it’s ‘I’m never smoking a cigarette again’.
Never, forever, always are huge timely terms and they don’t always work in promises to ourselves and others. Setting huge, overwhelming expectations for ourselves can often mean that we fall short of our promises. So, in Reiki, we promise that just for today we will uphold these principles which makes upholding them much more manageable.
Modern Reiki Principles
Just for today, I will not worry.
Just for today, I will not anger.
Today, I will live honestly and with integrity.
Just for today, I will respect the oneness of all life
Just for today, I will be kind to everyone I meet
Just for today, I will show gratitude to all living things.
Traditional Reiki Principles
For today only
anger not, worry not.
Be grateful and humble.
Do your work with appreciation.
Be kind to all beings
The Principles as affirmations
Today, I choose to live in the now and let go of worry
Today, I choose to be free of anger and judgment
Today, I will live honestly and with integrity
I respect and honor the oneness of all life
I choose to be kind to everyone I meet and also kind to myself
I choose to feel and show gratitude to all living things
